York County Community College kicked off their season on a road trip, leaving Massachusetts with a 16-5 win over Holyoke Community College.
It didn't take long to get things going, as the Hawks opened the top of the first inning with nine runs. 13 batters came to the plate, with Shortstop Jack Sullivan dealing the bulk of the damage, smacking two doubles and adding five RBI in the first inning.
First year pitcher James Erickson was stellar on the mound in his YCCC debut. Erickson ended the day with 5 innings pitched, 2 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. "It was a huge honor to be named as the opening day starter," said Erickson, a transfer from Saint Joes College of Maine. "I felt like I had great chemistry with Petit behind the plate, the defense made plays when they needed to, and I was able to work out of a couple of tough spots."
Anthony Barbieri and Brady Doherty followed Erickson on the mound, each tossing one inning without allowing an earned run.
The game was called after seven innings due to the 10-run mercy rule, but YCCC was still able to set the school record for runs scored with 16. "The bats were ready to go from the first pitch and we got a great start from Jimmy," said Assistant Coach Hunter Leroux-Porter. "It's a great start to the season and something we can build on as the spring progresses."
The Hawks head back to Mass on Wednesday for a 12:00 matinee game against Bunker Hill Community College.
