First Year Women's Cross-Country Student-Athlete
Meet Amy Stanek:
Amy Stanek competed in her first season with the York County Hawks Women's Cross-Country this fall. She had three top 10 finishes placing 8th, 6th, and 5th. Her fifth place finish was at the Yankee Small College Conference Championships. That was good enough to earn her a place on the All Conference team.
What Amy says about her first season of competition:
"When it is race day and there is a ball of nerves in my stomach, I just remind myself why I am there. I'm there to compete against myself and improve my pace and stamina.
I was nervous going into the championship race but reminded myself why I was there. I was only there to beat myself, my pace and endurance. My thoughts right before the race begins is to tell yourself that you are there to have fun. It's only a "Fun Run." But you must five it your all. Leave it all out there. Don't take anything home with you, especially regrets from not trying hard enoug. That's the motivation fo do your best.
What Coach Clement says about Amy:
"I am so happy for all of the success that Amy had with us this season, and really cannot be prouder. Some of her numeous accomplishments include setting YCCC school record for the 6K, becoming our first all-conference athlete in cross-country, and breaking her personal best in the 5K. I believe that Amy's success at the conference meet was a huge boost for our men's team and gave them confidence to know that they could go out on a very challenging course and race well.
One thing that has always stoood out to me about Amy is how after her race, when she is so exhausted she can barely stand, she still finds her way over to the finish line to cheer on the rest of the runners.
I am thrilled to have Amy on our team this year and cannot wait to see what she will accomplish next!"
Amy is currently a nursing student at YCCC. She is the proud parent of a son and daughter, Wolfe and Birdie respectively. Amy started running as a 6th grader in track. She added cross-country her freshman year in high school. Amy uses running to de-stress, especially running outside.
What Amy says about the YSCC Championships:
"I am proud of my performance at the YSCC Conference Championships. I have been one place away from an award twice this season. My running strategy was off though. I was so depleted by the end of the races. Coach Clement implemented a different running strategy for me. I didn't go all out in the first mile. This helped me maintain a constant energy level versus peaking too early. I'm glad this was the race that I got a plaque because I gave it my all and left everything on the course with no regrets.
